It's December 2, 2000 and I have finally arrived. We crossed the Pennine mountains and rolling valleys. There were fields of sheep where we (Americans) are used to seeing cattle. Finally being reunited with Ron, was a dream come true.
It was a long drive from Manchester airport to Doncaster. Well, at least it seemed long to me. I had traveled 8+ hours, not including the drive to Atlanta airport, the waiting to board etc. It had been a long and exciting day...
We finally pulled up the drive. Alan, the next door neighbor, opened his windows and played a rousing version of the Star Spangled Banner. I looked up and saw an American flag waving. Frank and Betty, the neighbors on the other side of Ron's home, also came out to meet me. I felt very welcomed...and...very tired.
So inside we went...and there was Ben the dog, with tail wagging and kisses.
The following day Ron took me to meet his brother Ian and Ian's partner Jan. It was great fun, even though I had to try and understand the accent and listen to a few Bush vs Gore jokes. They made me feel right at home.
